1000-1100 Air-cooled Fours '81-'08 with CV Slide Mikuni BS34 Carbs

This is the KZ1000 and KZ1100 third gen carburetor. These BS34 Mikuni carbs were first used in 1981. There are many variations and they all physically interchange with the exception of the throttle cable bracket that has differences on some models. This makes it common to have incorrect years or sizes on any of these bikes. The worst part is many were ID marked on the top bell housing with a acid etch that can be hard or impossible to see depending on age or cleaning done in the past. you have to be a real detective to figue out what set you actually have. Built correctly these carbs run excellent on any model listed here, built wrong you will hate life. Other than the ELR they all look very similar. The ELR uses black plastic tops rather than the signature notched corners seen in the pics below. The models painted black from the factory will have a stamped number on the #1 carb just above the main brace rail, facing out. All the ones unpainted had the acid etched numbers. All four will be marked on the left top so sometimes the centers are easier to read.

Pictured below is a KZ1100A '81-'82 (1418) carb set marked as "Pre '83 Kawasaki BS34" and a set of ZN1100B LTD '84-'85 carbs marked as '83-on Kawasaki BS34". These two carb sets encompass most of the changes found on all the carb models listed below. The pre '83 sets do not have the extra breather tees between the upper part of the inside and outside carbs on both sides. This is important to note as the '83 and later models with these extra vent Tees will have a no-bleed type idle jet. Just one of the many mistakes that can be made on these seemingly simple carbs. Also, the ZN1100 below is unique in the respect that the slides have a cut-away and only used on this bike and the ELR carbs. The rest of the 1000 and 1100 BS34's had flat bottoms.
